Join fellow Tufts alumni and friends Sunday, October 15th from 11:30 – 2:30 for an illuminating presentation by Tufts professors Lisa M. Shin and Samuel R. Sommers followed by an elegant private lunch at the Encore Bistro and Bar in the Cape Museum of Art complex in Dennis.

We live in a time of crisis and multiple sources of daily stress.  In response to these circumstances, Professors Lisa Shin and Sam Sommers of the Tufts Department of Psychology created a new course for students titled The Science of Coping.  Join us for a sampling of that course, in which two research scientists—one a clinical neuroscientist, one a social psychologist—introduce you to research theories and findings you can apply to your own life in concrete ways.  Topics will include: strategies for coping with stress and regulating emotion; the importance of nutrition, sleep, and exercise; the effects of social connection; navigating misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Samuel R. Sommers earned his Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Michigan and has been a professor of psychology at Tufts University since 2003, where he currently serves as Department Chair. He is a social psychologist whose research focuses on issues related to racial equity and diversity, with a frequent focus on the intersection of psychology and law. Dr. Sommers has won multiple teaching awards at Tufts, and in addition to co-authoring two textbooks, he has written two general audience books, Situations Matter: Understanding How Context Transforms Your World, and This Is Your Brain on Sports: The Science of Underdogs, the Value of Rivalry, and What We Can Learn from the T-Shirt Cannon.

Lisa M. Shin earned her Ph.D. in psychology at Harvard University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at The Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She has been on the faculty at Tufts University since 1998, where she is currently Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Shin’s research involves examining brain function and cognitive processing in patients with anxiety disorders, particularly posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Shin teaches courses in the Biological Bases of Psychopathology, Emotion and Memory, and Introduction to Psychology, and is co-author with Dr. Sommers of an introductory psychology textbook.
