Diving into the Deep with Alvin
At Saturday, April 15th’s CCTC Spring Luncheon Lane Abrams, Lead Electrical Engineer of the Alvin Program and Senior Engineer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, shared a fascinating look into not only the science thatHuman Occupied Vehicle (HOV) Alvin performs, but also the equipment and engineering of the vehicle itself. Alvin is the only deep submergence vessel in the U.S. that can carry humans into extreme ocean depths of up to 21,300 feet and conduct complex scientific study of the deep ocean and seafloor. This incredible HOV has given researchers in-person access to 99% of the ocean floor and is transforming the way we study and understand extreme environments and the vast diversity of life in the deep sea.
